Repair of an Highway using DYWIDAG Strand Anchors

The California Department of Transportation is repairing many highways across California that were damaged by a storm with very heavy rainfall. The inundations caused by the rain resulted in an erosion of the soil underneath the road that resulted in several mudslides.

An approx. 8km long section of scenic Highway 1 between Muir Beach and Stinson Beach northwest of San Francisco had to be closed because the road had dipped due to a mudslide.

To repair this section, retaining walls were built along the roadway into which the subcontractor, Pacific Coast Drilling, installed 271 permanent Type 4-0.6“ DYWIDAG Strand Anchors. Due to the prevailing soil conditions, the anchors could only be installed very slowly, and casings had to be used.

DYWIDAG supplied the permanent strand anchors and all galvanized anchorage connections.
